Echoes of Courage: New name, sharper focus
Reflections on courage and resistance amid democratic decline and rising authoritarianism
When I launched my newsletter in 2023, my goal was to write and publish regularly, sharing perspectives on how we could work together to bridge political divisions for the sake of our collective well-being. I also recorded and released several podcast recordings with the hopes of doing more.
But life had other plans.
As I was building momentum, personal responsibilities abruptly took center stage. Without much warning, I transitioned from barely being part of the sandwich generation to becoming a full-fledged member. I shifted my time and energy to support my family through some challenging times. With love, patience, a supportive community, time, and some personal good luck, I am relieved that we have reached a level of stability. Sadly, this comes just as our nation faces growing instability, the rise of fascism, and threats to both our democracy and civil society as we know it.
In the days after the 2024 presidential election, I cycled through grief, rage, despair, confusion, and even flashes of hope. Like many others, I wandered in a daze, exploring options for expatriation—countries that might take American immigrants, their visa requirements, and whether I could manage such a big life change emotionally, financially, and logistically. The answer, I realized, was no. I have too many people I am not willing to leave behind, and the thought of starting over somewhere else feels overwhelming. Ultimately, I decided to stay because I just couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t at least try to fight for our democracy and a thriving country for my children and future generations.
Since making that decision, I have been preparing—personally and professionally—for what may come. I’m saving money, spending less, and checking boycott lists before shopping. My family has organized important documents, stocked up on essentials, and even started a hydroponic garden. At work, my team and I have launched the Beyond 2025 Action Hub to inform and engage Americans about the fascist threats detailed in “Project 2025” and the “America First Agenda”, as well as the plans being implemented by President Trump and his cabinet. Hundreds of individuals, particularly social workers and public health practitioners, have joined us, ready to strategize and take action to defend against oligarchy, authoritarianism, and kleptocracy.
History is understood and remembered by those who control the narrative and tell their stories. That’s why Echoes of Courage matters. By sharing my thoughts, feelings, and observations, I aim to ignite reflection, foster dialogue, and document meaningful action. I invite you to share your experiences and insights in response to mine, so we can shape how future generations understand this critical time.
As we confront the gravity of our situation and recognize the psychological and financial warfare being waged against us, we can build our collective capacity to find courage to resist fascism and oligarchy. Together, we can shape a different narrative—one of resistance, resilience, and hope for our country and the future of our shared humanity.
